About the album
The young French pianist David Fray makes his debut on Virgin Classics with two extremes of the piano repertoire: Bach’s D major Partita and D minor French Suite are boldly coupled with Boulez’ Notations pour piano (1945), his early exploration of twelve-tone method, and the more recent (and brief) Incises (1994, revised 2001). Despite his nationality David Fray has already declared a single-minded commitment to the German repertoire, above all to Bach, whom he calls ‘a pinnacle; both a beginning and an end’; Boulez’ music is therefore ‘an exception’, but a particular area of interest, and Boulez himself provided encouragement at the outset of David’s career, advising him on the interpretation of the two works and recommending him at the 2006 German Klavier Festival Ruhr, where David’s recital won him the Young Talent prize. As David explained in an interview with the BBC Music Magazine, ‘For my first disc I wanted to show some of the earliest pieces for keyboard in the repertoire and some of the most recent — then you can develop your own keyboard repertoire in your mind.’
David Fray studied with Jacques Rouvier at the Paris Conservatoire, graduating with highest honours in 2004, and is quickly earning a formidable reputation as a brilliant young recitalist and concerto soloist. This disc marks the beginning of an exclusive recording contract with Virgin Classics.
